Can you turn your candy crush into a wellness routine? Sarah Hyland did. The actress and women’s health advocate—who shot to fame on Modern Family, then became a red carpet darling thanks to her down-to-earth personality and flirty style—joined up with Sourse in 2021, helping make their signature cocoa vitamins a staple for millions.
“Creating a fun experience through chocolate was important,” says Hyland, whose own chronic health problems inspired her to help the 38% of American women in the same boat. “I love that I can bring health into people’s lives,” she notes—without taking away the easy joy of an afternoon snack break.
Here’s how Sarah uses chocolate as a tool for good, what she wants you to know about her very best friends, and how she takes concrete steps—literally—to help curb an anxiety attack.
Sourse uses plant-based ingredients in its vitamins. Did that influence your decision to work with them?
My interest in Sourse was organic. My health journey and experiences have influenced my health and wellness habits, and have caused me to really seek out products that are truly good for your body while still being tasty. Our mission is to make wellness accessible and enjoyable to everyone, which means plant-based, clean ingredients.
What did you learn about plant-based ingredients like saffron (disclosure: we’re obsessed) when formulating Mood Bites and Beauty Bites?
So many things! First of all, I am extremely knowledgeable on medications and supplements since I have to take so many. There are a lot of supplements that you cannot take if you have a chronic illness or other health concerns. Saffron is an amazing spice that has health benefits for stress support, sleep and many other areas that can be enjoyed by everyone. It’s a great alternative to Ashwagandha, which I cannot take because it interferes with my immune system.
What’s one of your favorite places in nature? How do you feel when you’re there?
Anywhere I can be grounded—that is, barefoot and connecting with the Earth, taking in the senses, and unplugging.
Is that how nature influences your mental health, too?
Absolutely. It’s important to connect to the world around you. I do this through grounding work, where you're just in nature barefoot and you can really connect with the Earth and the vibrations. I think it's so important to connect back to where we are, who we are, and to just kind of close off all of your brain, other than just your senses. How do you feel on the ground? What do you hear in the air? What do you smell? What can you see? I use this when I start having an anxiety attack or something similar.
What’s your favorite way to move your body outdoors?
We love going on hikes with our dog, Boo!
Please tell us your favorite animal fact.
It’s not a fact, but my dogs have always been there throughout my life. They’re just an endless well of unconditional love. They truly are your best friend!
