Plant Food: The Best Plant-Based Yogurts

This one is personal. Here at Wild Elements, we’ve had countless Slack conversations about the best vegan yogurt brands, and whether it’s even possible to replace our beloved breakfast staple with a vegan alternative. We’re especially obsessed because a great yogurt isn’t just an easy AM food grab—it’s also packed with probiotics that help boost our gut health, plus the vegan food protein to power us through the morning.

The good news is, there are plant-based yogurts with the same probiotic benefits as dairy yogurts, along with creamy texture, great taste, and the added benefit of plant-based protein and nutrients.

Here are the best plant-based yogurts we’ve tried, but if you’ve got another favorite, sharing is caring! Email us hello@wildelements.com and we’ll keep updating the site.

The “Are You Sure This Isn’t Yogurt?” Yogurt…

Forager Project’s unsweetened cashew yogurt is super creamy, has just the right amount of sour tang, and contains probiotics similar to Greek yogurt. Because it’s a truly “plain” flavor, you can add your own swirl of maple syrup, fruit, and nuts—or sage, olive oil and sea salt—for a taste that matches your craving.

The Protein Packed Option…

Siggi’s coconut blend yogurt has 10 grams of protein, thanks to ingredients like macadamia nuts and pea powder. It also contains live active cultures for probiotic health similar to traditional yogurt, and flavor options like vanilla & cinnamon and mixed berries.

The No-Nut Formula That Still Tastes Great…

Nancy’s probiotic oat milk yogurt is nut free, dairy free, gluten free, soy free, and still super tasty. (Magic is real?!) Plus, it uses fava beans to infuse each serving with 6 grams of plant protein for optimum energy in the A.M.

The Smoothie Staple…

We’re big fans of Kite Hill’s smooth almond-based formula for a seamless blend with our smoothies and acai bowls. Especially amazing: They make an unsweetened vanilla flavor, so you can get the taste you want without any added sugar… but with up to 17 added grams of protein per serving.

The Grab and Go Option…

Did you know that Trader Joe’s launched their own line of dairy free yogurts back in 2020? It’s true and… drumroll… the yogurts are great! (Albeit a little higher in sugar than some of the other options.) We especially like their vanilla bean flavor for a quick midday snack, maybe (okay fine, absolutely) paired with a few squares of salted dark chocolate.

The Best Dairy-Free Kefir Substitute…

Once again, The Forager Project takes top honors with their drinkable cashew yogurt in strawberry, blueberry, mango, vanilla, or plain. It’s so crave-worthy, we’ve been known to chug it straight from the bottle, or mix the plain flavor with some fresh-squeezed orange juice for a vegan Creamsicle vibe.
